When I decided to start LolaMae Artistry, I knew I'd be wearing many hats - founder, maker, writer, and yes, even photographer. What I didn't realize was how intimidating product photography would feel at first. With no formal training and a basic camera setup, I set out to take my very first candle photos.
Winging It, Creatively
It was hard not to become overwhelmed with everything that goes into a photo. There's lighting to consider (I used a softbox and am still figuring out the settings!), camera angles to experiment with, and staging to bring the image to life. I decided to keep things simple for the first pictures and only shoot the candles with no props except the candle lid and a coaster. The photos you see here are the result of a lot of trial and error -- and I am still learning. My goal was never perfection, just authenticity.
Celebrating Small Wins
Were some shots crooked? Definitely. Overexposed? You bet. But each photo I took felt like a small step forward -- not just in learning photography, but in believing I can do this. I'm building something from the heart, and that includes the messy, beautiful learning process.
What I've Learned So Far
- Props make a big difference -- next time I'll try some fresh flowers, matches or soft fabrics
- Lighting is everything (note to self: keep practicing softbox placement and settings)
- I am my own worst critic. It's wonderful to take the initiative and just start. It's okay to be a beginner.
If you're thinking about starting something new, let this be your sign to just start. Your first try doesn't have to be flawless to be meaningful.
